Always ahead of the curve, Schulz introduced surfing into the Peanuts strip the on August 9 1965. Surfing was still a relatively underground pursuit at the time, living its first heydays in California before spreading to all corners of the globe. In the strip, Snoopy tries to impress a ‘beach-beagle’, proving he’s ‘no hodad’ by showing off his ‘hotdogging’ including a hang ten and tail slide, unfortunately he wipes out to a chorus of “WIPE OUT!” from the watching Charlie Brown and Linus. Schulz’s use of subcultural surf slang such as Hodad (a non surfer) and hotdogging (showing off with tricks) illustrates how connected he was to the zeitgeist and especially youth culture. Much of this slang and information came courtesy of his son Craig, who later recalled, "I think Dad lived vicariously through a lot of the things his kids did," he said. "If you look at the comic strip, you'll see that when Snoopy surfs, it's from when I was surfing in L.A. When Snoopy's a helicopter pilot, it's from when I was flying helicopters. When he's riding a motorcycle, it's from my moto-cross career.” 

Soon after, San Franciscos Determined Productions released their first Peanuts ’Surf’s Up’ sweatshirt into the clamouring marketplace with artwork taken directly from the strip and blended with their Edwardian Pop Art typeface to great effect. This is an exact reproduction of that design.
