Los Angeles in the 1960s and early 1970s was a magical place where a dizzying array of musical artists and subcultural groups congregated to create much of the music and art that provided the backdrop to those turbulent times. Many of these outliers lived together and jammed together in bucolic communities nestled in and around the Hollywood Hills.

Malibu was one such community, home to musicians and movie stars on the fringes of the counterculture including Dennis Hopper and Neil Young among others, both of whom had made the acquaintance of a wannabe singer songwriter named Charlie Manson. Manson and his 'Family' were living at the Spahn Movie Ranch, nestled just behind Malibu in the Simi Hills, an old Hollywood movie set location that was transformed into the Family's headquarters.
