Los Angeles born Bud Ekins was a true off-road racing star, America’s top Triumph dealer in the 1960s, stunt rider extraordinaire and best friend of Hollywood legend Steve McQueen. It was Ekins, as McQueen’s stunt double, who performed the dangerous motorcycle jump over barbed wire in the WWII classic ‘The Great Escape’. Ekins learned to ride in the Hollywood Hills, honing his off-road skills long before he could legally ride on the road. Even by his late teenage years he was earning a mighty reputation as one of SoCal’s top motocross and desert racers. In the 60s he opened Los Angeles’ biggest Triumph dealership in Sherman Oaks. He would inspire generations of new motocross riders including Craig Schulz, the son of Peanuts creator Charles Schulz, who thanks to his son's motorcross interest would create the Snoopy character Joe Motorcross for the strip.
