Dennis Wilson's follow up top his seminal 1977 solo debut was to be called "Bambu", named after a cigarette rolling paper brand and not the Asian plant. By 1979 it was more or less complete but by this point his life was slowly falling apart, helped along by an epic alcohol and drug habit. Primarily recorded at Brother Studios in Santa Monica, Bambu is dominated by a damaged grandeur. Epic arrangements contrast with Dennis' now degraded vocals. The music is cloudy, meticulously scored yet somehow imprecise, a kind of brilliant amorphous rethink of late ‘70s AOR. While the other Beach Boys were trying manfully to cash in on the disco scene with “Here Comes The Night”, scrupulously hiding all the messy stuff as best they could, Dennis had crafted a piece of slow dynamite, and the perfect complement to “Pacific Ocean Blue”.
As Dennis' life descended ever downward Bambu was be shelved, and when he died in 1983 at Marina Del Rey while diving for personal relics in the former slip of his boat The Harmony, his sophomore record would be all but forgotten for decades.
