Dennis Wilson was the Beach Boys’s only surfer, an unruly rebel and the group’s sex symbol. Dennis was the group’s manic id, a pleasure seeking hedonist who grabbed fistfuls of life with unfettered abandon. Boyishly handsome, he epitomised icy cool with his cocksure attitude and a knowing, mischievous smirk that the girls (and their mothers) would understand. He was a man of extremes, his insatiable appetite for sex, drugs and rock’n’ roll meant he lived precipitously on the edge. Yet he was compassionate and generous, a sensitive man of emotional depth who also possessed a ton of talent.

Through his good friend James Guerico of Caribou Records, CBS Records had been courting Dennis as a solo artist in 1976. Dennis had previewed some solo recordings to the company’s A&R department in early ’77 and a promo film created by his friend Ed Roach was screened for CBS execs and retailers to generate further momentum. It showed Dennis working in the studio on an epic composition titled ‘The River Song’. When Mike Love and the other Beach Boys found out that Dennis had received a six figure advance upon signing his solo contract with Caribou, they reacted in a typically jealous manner. Mike Love lost his shit, he’d been hoping for a CBS solo deal of his own, but no one was interested. Dennis and Mike’s relationship was fiery at best, they’d spent the last decade hating each other and now Dennis was about to eclipse the band.

When it was released on September 16th 1977, Pacific Ocean Blue sent a shock wave through the Beach Boys hierarchy. Dennis’ solo album was clearly superior to any Beach Boys release going back to the early 70s and many people, including the Beach Boys, were convinced he’d never need the band again.
