One of John Milius' initial concepts for the main characters in Apocalypse Now was to include a DASPO officer to narrate the story. During the Vietnam War the special operations teams of the Department of the Army Special Photographic Office (DASPO) captured some of the most unique and telling images of the conflict. In 1962, President John F. Kennedy authorised the activation of DASPO. Their duty was to provide the government with an unbiased view of military subjects all over the world. The Pacific Detachment of DASPO, nicknamed “Team Charlie”, was the most active of the sections due to its coverage of Vietnam combat operations. Based in Fort Shafter, Hawaii DASPO Pacific sent rotating teams of photographers into Vietnam for three-month tours of duty.
