David Bowie transformed popular culture through radical reinvention, gender fluidity and genre blending. Bowie was the first post-modern rock star, he opened himself up to wide range of influences and absorbed them, from Japanese Kabuki theatre to the occult teachings of Aleister Crowley. Bowie continually sought to challenge himself and push his art forwards, in 1975 he moved to Los Angeles, a culture he actively disliked to deliberately challenge his creative writing. His time in the city, though highly productive, proved to be one of the darkest and most turbulent periods of his life.
