The budding counterculture of the early 1960s kindled a resurgence of traditional handcraftsmanship and an interest in simpler times. The Los Angeles Renaissance Fair was the first gathering of its kind in the US. Partly focused on the history of an era of awakening from the Dark Ages in Europe, it also embraced the high fantasy lore of Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings. By early 1968, the fair was well established. An ever-growing number of publications and media outlets covered its unique offerings; a cleverly titled article in the LA Free Press, named ‘California: Serf’s Up’, it detailed the crossover between the intellectual community and musicians in the counterculture. The opening day crowd included John Densmore and Robby Krieger of the Doors, accompanied by a young aspiring actor named Harrison Ford honing his skills as a second cameraman working on a road tour film about the band.
