The March 7 1970 edition of the LA Free Press featured an article on the Joshua Tree Surf Club, the ironically named arts collective based in the Mojave desert near Joshua Tree National Park.
Originally formed in 1968 by CAL ARTS students, the collective became more and more politically radical and avant garde to the point where many of the original members had distanced themselves from it. The Free Press article titled ‘Hang Loose’, reported on how Charles Manson had spent some time with the collective in early 1969 and that what had started out as an arts group was “....now operating as a ‘free love’ commune outside of the rules of normal society”.
