John Holmes ranks among the most famous and prolific adult film performers, with documented credits for at least 573 films. During the later 1970s, as porn became chic, he was reputedly earning as much as $3,000 per day and mixing with Hollywood film stars and famous musicians at night. He invested his money in various projects including the short lived American Sound Recording Studio in West Hollywood with the intention of starting a career in music. Its main claim to fame being some sessions for Jerry Garcia's 1978 solo album Cats Under the Stars were recorded there.

Holmes' subsequent cocaine consumption quickly become an increasingly serious problem for his career. To support himself and his drug habit, Holmes ventured into crime, selling drugs for gangs and was even charged in connection with the infamous Wonderland murders.
