Neil Young, or ‘Shakey’ to his friends, was living in Malibu in 1975, not far from Zuma beach, when he started recording his seminal album ZUMA. Famously photographed on the PCH in Malibu at this time, long haired, wearing a battered western hat and old US military jacket, he doesn’t look dissimilar to Snoopy’s desert dwelling brother Spike.

In many ways Spike was a reflection of Neil Young, introduced by Schulz into the strip in 1975 his resemblance to Young in the Malibu photo series is uncanny. Spike also represented the archetypal existential artist within the strip, a searcher like Young. Schulz described him as “....we know he lives with the coyotes outside Needles, and that’s about all we know. There is about him, with his thin, faintly exotic moustache and soulful eyes, an air of mystery that is totally foreign to what Snoopy is.”
