In a 1977 Pacifica Radio interview, Neil Young recalled the story behind the artwork for his 1975 album Zuma. A pencil sketch by Young’s friend James Mazzeo, depicting a dreamlike California, was based on a visual idea of Young’s about time travel, and a “bird flying women over the desert, pyramids and stuff.” This type of dream imagery punctuates many of Young’s 1970s albums, often without clear lines separating sleeping from waking life.
Young also cited UFO hotspot Point Dume, the headland next to Zuma Beach situated near producer David Briggs’ house in Malibu, where much of the album was recorded as an influence. We might also associate his fluid state of mind with the drug and alcohol intake where sessions were fuelled by tequila, angel dust and marijuana-infused ‘honey slides’.
