By the mid 1970s, Santa Cruz, California had been dubbed “the Murder Capital of the World”. Between 1970 and 1973, this small coastal and college town experienced an extraordinary concentration of horrific violent crimes. While it was a sensational media monicker rather than an official global statistical rank, the sheer density of simultaneous high-profile serial and mass killers operating in such a small community cemented the label.

What better place then for Hollywood to superimpose the sun-kissed horror paradise and bohemian lifestyle of the fictitious Santa Carla, setting for Joel Schumacher's 1987’s seminal MTV Vampire horror. The movie’s iconic shot of the surfer running out of the sea at dusk towards the safety of home before darkness falls, neatly summed up the danger of the hidden world that existed when the sun set on the Californian idyll.

The movie offered so much more than style, nostalgia, and genre thrills though. At its core, nearly four decades later, Schumacher’s film is a remarkably prescient tale that mines the complexities of brotherhood and teen alienation. The movie’s portrayal of seemingly wayward adolescent sons debuted at a time when many Americans feared the deterioration of traditional dynamics in the home—between parent and child, husband and wife. More so than the other films of its era, it subtly challenged the dominant Reagan era cultural expectations that saw the nuclear family as a social and moral ideal.
