"Beneath the paving stones, the beach!"

In May 1968 the cobblestones that lined Paris’ streets, known as pavés, became the symbol of revolution. Students and protesters used them to block streets, fight off the police, and build barricades. They weren’t just stones—they were weapons of rebellion, symbols of resistance.

The slogan "Sous les pavés, la plage!" -  Beneath the paving stones, the beach! - became a rallying cry for the revolution, on posters, graffiti, pin badges and homemade t shirts, the phrase was a kind of Situationist poetic dream. “Beneath the paving stones, the beach” implied that if you could get past the oppressive weight of society (symbolised by the cobblestones), you would find something beautiful, something free—like the beach, a place for escape, relaxation, and happiness. It was a cry for freedom—a utopian vision of a world beyond the constraints of the old establishment.

Neil Young's classic 1974 album On The Beach was in many ways a commentary on the events of 1968 and the two years that followed. Using the beach as an analogy, he delivered a bleak, definitive counter-narrative to the utopian optimism of the Paris uprising, capturing the era’s post-Watergate paranoia, the death of the hippie dream, and the suffocating dark side of the California music scene.
