The ironic “Save the humans” design was first used by the West Hollywood Peace Project, an organisation dedicated to empowering nonviolent political and social change. Founded in 1969, they have worked to raise awareness about political and social issues by partnering with various activist groups, providing educational and fundraising resources and distributing buttons, shirts, and bumper stickers to promote these issues. Numerous musicians within the counterculture including Neil Young, the Grateful Dead and Brian Wilson have all worn their t shirts and pin badges.
