Hopper’s Photojournalist character was developed ad hoc while on set, Coppola gradually evolved Hopper’s look as shooting progressed. While Hopper was a well respected and published photographer himself, actual Vietnam combat photographer Chas Gerretsen assisted him with the accuracy of his character, including the numerous Nikon F’s being carried. The role of the photojournalist was inspired by The Harlequin in Coppola’s source material Heart of Darkness by Joseph Conrad. It was also reported, but never clarified, that combat photographer Sean Flynn (son of Errol) formed the basis of inspiration for Hopper’s role.
