During the 1960s, one single event brought environmental concerns more into focus than any other. An oil spill in the Pacific Oceans Santa Barbara Channel in 1969, killed more than 10,000 sea creatures, devastated the coastline and poisoned the water table effecting inland ecology. What followed was a wave of campus activism that led to the Earth Day in 1970. It's estimated that over 20 million Americans protested against the impact of 150 years of industrial capitalist development. This brought the Environmental movement into the mainstream. Groups that had been fighting individually against oil spills, polluting factories and power plants, raw sewage, toxic dumps, pesticides, freeway, the loss of wilderness and the extinction of wildlife united on Earth Day around these shared common values.
