As the popularity of the Los Angeles Renaissance Faire grew within the counterculture during the 1960s and into the 70s, so did fringe interest in the fantasy genre, primarily Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings. The American Tolkien Society was first organised in Malibu in 1972; their journal, the Minas Tirith Evening-Star began publication independently in 1967 and is still in print today.

In a 1978 Pacifica Radio interview with the Malibu based Tolkien Society, co founder Phillip Helms cited it as “....a meeting ground for the exchange of ideas and joy generated by Tolkien’s monumental works”.
