In a 1970 article titled ‘Goodbye Surfing, Hello God!’, Brian Wilson discussed his defunct SMILE project for the first time,
“....I took LSD and it just tore my head off....you just come to grips with what you are, what you can do and can’t do and learn to face it.”
The title referred to the shift in Wilson’s writing, moving away from surf centric songs and toward what he himself described as Pet Sound’s ‘Teenage Symphonies to God’. With Brian retreating from public and band life, the other Beach Boys formed Brother Records and began to record a string of critically acclaimed records including Surfs Up, Sunflower and Holland.
