Dennis Wilson was the Beach Boys’s only surfer, an unruly rebel and the group’s sex symbol. Dennis was the group’s manic id, a pleasure seeking hedonist who grabbed fistfuls of life with unfettered abandon. Boyishly handsome, he epitomised icy cool with his cocksure attitude and a knowing, mischievous smirk that the girls (and their mothers) would understand. He was a man of extremes, his insatiable appetite for sex, drugs and rock’n’ roll meant he lived precipitously on the edge. Yet he was compassionate and generous, a sensitive man of emotional depth who also possessed a ton of talent.

By the mid-1970s, with Brian a troubled recluse and Mike Love angling for more creative control, Dennis Wilson entered the studio with his friend and songwriter Gregg Jakobson; in 1977, he released Pacific Ocean Blue-- a raw, bluesy masterpiece of ocean-worshipping psychedelia. Not only is the album is a wonderful study in 'surfer soul' imbued with the expressiveness of Dennis' piano style , it's also a meditation on a complex world. His works show the obvious influence of the blues and soul, with Wilson manifestly stating the predicament of his own aimless love and rootless existence. The arrangements are characteristically grandiose, but with an edge. And Wilson’s voice, honed/punished by several years of booze and hard living, had taken on a rough polish. There’s no separation between Wilson’ voice and his psyche and soul.
