In 1962, San Francisco ad man Howard Gossage came up with the idea of putting the faces of Classical composers on sweatshirts and selling them as a promotional tool for Rainier Ale. Consumers could choose between Beethoven, Bach, or Brahms. They quickly sold around 60,000 of them. Gossage wrote some of the quirkiest and most effective ads of all time, in the process breaking all the rules. He helped launch the environmental movement and left a legacy of brilliant campaigns, which for the first time showed that advertising wasn’t just about selling a product, it can be used to change the world. The good people at Determined Productions were taking note when they introduced their idea of Peanuts characters on sweatshirts in 1965. Schulz repaid the favour to Gossage in a strip where Schroeder is depicted wearing a Beethoven sweatshirt.
