Eve Babitz - semiotician, author, visual artist, cultural commentator - Queen of L.A.
If any writer ever captured the true feel and spirit of Los Angeles it was Eve Babitz. She described her California odyssey as a “confessional novel”, but this seems too limited a category for the author’s syncopated melodies: part memoir, part fiction, and essayistic in form. Her work takes us on a cerebral joyride through Los Angeles’ dive bars, beaches, neighbourhoods and parties. Babitz's writing defined the cultural scene of Los Angeles during that time, with numerous references to and interactions with the artists, musicians, writers, actors, and sundry other iconic figures that made up the scene in the 1960s, 1970s, and 1980s. Her side hustle as a visual artist duting the late 60s found her designing album covers for LA glitterati including The Byrds, Linda Ronstadt and Buffalo Springfield among others.
