Running used to be subversive, weird and wonderful. It used to celebrate the existential search created by pushing the body to its limit. In the early 1970s the Esalen Institute in Big Sur, California, pioneered the integrated approach of mind and body and named it the human potential movement. Exploring all aspects of the mind-body experience they studied the meditative and transcendent aspects of athletics. The Grateful Dead’s Bob Weir was a big early advocate of running for spiritual wellbeing, the Dead song Fire On The Mountain with its ‘Long Distance Runner....’ lyrics were about Weir and his obsession.
