The GTOs featured a number of key players within Los Angeles' rock music scene during the 1960s. In total, seven women were in the band at one point or another, and they referred to themselves by the honorific ‘Miss’ followed by their name, or a nickname. The most well-known member of the band was Miss Pamela, or Pamela Des Barres to use her usual name. Also in the band was proto goth Christine Ann Frka (Miss Christine) who is often credited with creating Alice Cooper's stage persona. Elsewhere, the band contained Cynthia Sue Wells (Miss Cynderella), who went on to marry the Velvet Underground's John Cale following the break-up of The GTOs in 1970.

In presence, look, and attitude, the GTOs paved the way for the rowdy, personality-plus, all-female groups that emerged in Los Angeles after them, including the Runaways, the Go-Go’s and L7!, inspiring generations of young women to take the stage and pursue their rock ‘n’ roll dreams. Movie star glamorous in their thrift store Victorian and Depression-era attire, Miss Pamela and the GTOs were fashion icons ahead of their time.

During their short time together, between 1968 and 1970, The GTOs produced only one album, 1969’s Permanent Damage released on Zappa's Straight label. Created with an ensemble cast of songwriters and contributors, notable inclusions being Jeff Beck and Rod Stewart, as well as Zappa on production duties, the record is among the most diverse and original that the 1960s had to offer.
