West Hollywood was a weird place in 1969. A vibrant hub of the counterculture, its psychogeography is littered with iconic places including the Chateau Marmont, the Alta Cienega Motel, the Wiskey a Go Go, Barney’s Beanery and Beach Boy Brian Wilson’s health food store The Radiant Radish
Brian’s decision to venture into retail with the opening of The Radiant Radish, at the corner of Melrose Avenue and San Vicente Boulevard m, was the result of a growing interest in health and wellness, famously previewed in the Beach Boys’ 1967 song “Vegetables” from his abandoned SMILE project
According to reports, store hours were highly irregular. Wilson would open the place when the mood struck, often late at night, serving customers while wearing pyjamas, a bathrobe, and slippers. He frequently bought his own stock in bulk, sometimes racking up bills close to $1,000. He also once refused to sell a journalist a bottle of Vitamin B-12 without a doctor’s note. Despite his enthusiasm for the cash register–which he later said was his favourite part of the business–the store folded by 1971
