Stewart Brand was at the heart of 60s counterculture and is now widely revered as the tech visionary whose work anticipated the internet. In 1968 he published the first edition of what came to be the magnum opus of the entire counterculture, the Whole Earth Catalog – a book that some people believed changed the world.

Though it was more of a how-to manual than a book, a compendium, an encyclopaedia, a literary review, an opinionated life guide, and a collection of readers’ recommendations and reviews of everything from computational physics to goat husbandry. It featured many then radical ideas such as organic farming, solar power, recycling, wind power, desktop publishing, mountain bikes, midwife-assisted birth, female masturbation, computers, electronic synthesizers that are now simply part of the mainstream world.
