In a 1967 interview Brian Wilson quoted Charles Schulz's "Happiness is...." aphorism when discussing the Beach Boys' shift from surf / car songs to their masterpiece Pet Sounds. He told the interviewer that "Happiness is a sad song....". One of Pet Sounds most celebrated tracks I Just Wasn't Made For These Times is a first-person chronicle of disillusionment from a narrator who, despite being intelligent, can't find a place where he can comfortably feel like a part of the world. Brian Wilson later said the song was "....about coming to terms with one's differences .. ultimately, the answer to my question—'Where do I fit in?'—lies in the realisation that I don't."
