Much of the counterculture and West Coast folk were mightily inspired by the mythos of JRR Tolkien’s Middle Earth during the late 1960s and 70s - from the mountainous homes of the Elves, the recreational use of 'Pipe Weed' and most importantly the connection with nature itself - his characters became icons of the Hippie generation. 'Frodo Lives!' pin badges were worn by students, musicians and movers and shakers. Gandalf was also a favorite, his image used in numerous Head Shoppe advertisements at the time.
