Named for the indigenous Chumash settlement of Humaliwo, which means “the surf sounds loudly”, Malibu holds a distinct place in Los Angeles’ history. Few roads even entered the area before 1929, when the state won another court case and built what is now known as the Pacific Coast Highway. Malibu Colony was one of the first areas with private homes after it was opened to development in 1926. Malibu’s idyllic proximity to both the coast and Santa Monica Mountains meant it would find itself host to numerous outsiders, cults and esoteric groups. Synanon, the Solar Lodge, the Manson Family and Thelema all found homes in Malibu among the musicians and Hollywood film star elite.
