Nestled in LA's magical Laurel Canyon, Gandalf's Bar and Grill was an ironically named tiny bookstore. Opened in 1970 and favored by many of the musicians living in the Canyon at the time, it stocked a mixture of esoteric, fantasy and critical works by the countercultures most noted authors.

Many West Coast folk were mightily inspired by the mythos of JRR Tolkien’s Middle Earth during the late 1960s and 70s - from the mountainous homes of the Elves, the recreational use of 'Pipe Weed' and most importantly the connection with nature itself - his characters became icons of the Hippie generation. 'Frodo Lives!' pin badges were worn by students, musicians and movers and shakers. Gandalf was also a favorite, his image used in numerous Head Shoppe advertisements at the time.

Later, Ralph Bakshi's iconic dark 1978 adaptation of The Lord of the Rings inspired a new generation of fans including us
